Today's plan
A short checklist for the day, split into morning, afternoon, and evening. Most lines tick themselves off when you log a meal, a workout, a game, or a night's sleep, so nothing gets entered twice.
- Seventeen built-in items
- Choose from five groups: food, body, mind, night, and everything else. Some, like “Talk to someone” or “Get outside,” are things no sensor can see, so you tick them yourself.
- Your own goals
- Write your own and pick what completes it, like 20 minutes of exercise or three game rounds. A goal like “Call my sister” simply waits for your tap.
- Routines
- Choose a 5, 15, or 30-minute routine, or save your own under a name like “Gym day.”
- Reminders
- Tap the bell on any line to turn it into a daily reminder at a time you pick.
Diet log
Log what you eat by name, by scanning a barcode, or by searching a public nutrition database. Calories and macros are tracked against daily goals you set.
- Barcode scanning
- Point your camera at a package and the app looks it up in Open Food Facts, a free public food database.
- Food search
- Search the USDA's FoodData Central for raw ingredients, everyday dishes, and anything cooked at home, then set the portion.
- Calories and macros
- Track protein, carbohydrate, fat, and fiber. Each goal shows green, amber, or red depending on how close you are.
- MIND diet marks
- Optionally count foods from the MIND diet, an eating pattern studied for brain health. You can switch this off entirely.
- Calorie estimate
- A calculator estimates your daily energy needs using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. It's an estimate, not dietary advice.
Talk to a doctor or dietitian before changing how you eat, especially if you take medication, are pregnant, or manage a long-term condition.
Back to contentsExercise, strength, and weight
The exercise log answers “did I move today?” Strength answers “am I getting stronger?” They're kept apart on purpose, because one is measured in minutes and the other in sets, reps, and pounds.
- Apple Health
- Connect it and the app reads your exercise minutes, active calories, steps, walking and running distance, and workouts. It only reads, and never writes to Health.
- Sessions by hand
- Forgot your watch? Add a session yourself and it joins the totals for your weekly goal.
- Strength log
- Record sets, reps, and weight for each lift. Build routines like “Push day” so a whole session is laid out, ready to fill in.
- Two numbers for lifting
- Pounds lifted shows how much work a session was. Lift score shows how heavy it was. Together they tell you whether you're getting stronger or just training longer.
- Training blocks
- Name a stretch of weeks, like a 12-week program, and read its charts on their own.
- Weight
- One weigh-in a week on a day you choose, with an optional reminder. Weekly readings show the trend without daily water-weight swings.
Sleep center
Two sides: a log for how you slept, and sounds to help you drift off.
- Sleep log
- Record your hours and how the night felt.
- Sleep journal
- Optionally note your bedtime, when you woke, and what you did beforehand.
- Sleep sounds
- Waves, rain, brown noise, or white noise on a timer. Waves and rain are generated by the app, so there's nothing to download and the loop never audibly repeats.
- Plays while locked
- Once you switch it on, sound keeps playing with your phone locked.
Synaptiva makes no claim that the sounds will help you sleep, and they aren't a treatment for insomnia or any other condition. Keep the volume low.
Back to contentsTwelve games
Grouped by what they ask of you. Most get harder when you're doing well and easier when you're not. The three music games need an internet connection; the rest work anywhere.
Space and sequence
Where things were, and in what order.
- Memory grid
- Squares light up. Tap them back: where they were, and if you like, in what order.
- Ring sequence
- Lights travel around a ring. Tap them back in order. It's silent, so you can play anywhere.
Learning and recall
Holding something new in mind long enough to use it.
- Digit span
- Hold a run of numbers in mind, forward or backward.
- Word recall
- Study a list, then pick those words out from among others.
- Language recall
- Learn a few words in another language, then translate them back.
Speed and attention
Seeing it and acting, before you have time to think.
- Quick tap
- Several targets, and one turns green. Find it and tap it, as many times as you choose.
- Speed sort
- Sort shapes into the right baskets against the clock. No counting, just sorting.
- Dodge
- Steer a dot through falling shapes with one finger. There's always a way through.
Reasoning
Working an answer out from what you already know.
- Estimation
- How many toothbrushes weigh as much as a piano? Reason it out from what you know.
Music and memory
Songs you know, and what they're attached to.
- Recall music quiz
- Hear a clip, then name the song and the artist.
- Deep cut
- One song, eight questions, from the title to where you were when it played.
- Guess the album
- See a cover, choose from four titles, and name the album it belongs to.
- Music categories
- Play built-in categories like 80s rock, 90s R&B, or K-pop, or build your own from a few artist names.
- Games elsewhere
- Crosswords, chess, puzzles: log games you play outside the app. They're kept in their own category, apart from the scores the app measures.
- Shuffle
- Not sure what to play? The shuffle button picks for you.
- Personal records
- Your best result in each game is kept, so you can see how far you've come.
Song previews, artwork, and details are provided by Apple. Clips are the 30-second previews Apple publishes, streamed as you listen and never stored, and every round credits the track. Apple Music and iTunes are trademarks of Apple Inc. Synaptiva is not affiliated with or endorsed by Apple.
Back to contentsAuditory stimulation
Sound on a timer, with a record of how long you listened. The screen explains what each sound is and what is and isn't known about it.
- 40 Hz clicks
- A click 40 times a second. Gamma is the name for brain activity in roughly the 30 to 100 Hz range, and research is looking at whether rhythmic sound at that rate affects it. That research is ongoing.
- White noise
- An even hiss across all frequencies, like an untuned radio.
- Brown noise
- Weighted to the low end. Deeper and softer than white noise, more like rainfall.
- Binaural beat
- A slightly different tone in each ear, heard as a single pulsing tone. It needs headphones, so the app asks before it starts.
Synaptiva plays these sounds and makes no claim about what they will do for you. If you have epilepsy, tinnitus, a hearing condition, or any concern about your health, talk to a doctor before using them, and keep the volume comfortable.
Back to contentsCognitive baseline
Eight short tests at a fixed difficulty, scored out of 100: numbers, words, new vocabulary, squares, the ring, speed, sorting, and estimates. Because the difficulty never changes, one sitting can be compared with the next. Ordinary games can't do that, because you get better at them.
| Length | Time | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Fast | 5 min | One run of each test. Quick, and the roughest reading. |
| Moderate | 10 min | Two runs of each. Noticeably steadier. |
| Standard | 15 min | Three runs of each. A good balance for a monthly sitting. |
| In depth | 20 min | Four runs of each. The most reliable, and the longest. |
Once a month is the suggestion. Taking it sooner mostly measures practice rather than change. Sit it somewhere quiet when you're reasonably awake, because tiredness moves these scores more than almost anything else.
Back to contentsProgress and insights
Several ways to look back, each honest about how much data sits behind it.
- This week
- A live rollup of the last seven days against your goals.
- Weekly report
- Each finished week, Monday to Sunday, compared with the week before. Save it as a PDF.
- Long-term
- A small summary of every finished day, kept for five years, so you can look back across months on a calendar.
- Cognitive dashboard
- Your scores by area: spatial memory, learning and recall, processing speed, recognition, and estimation.
- How much data
- Every trend is labeled from “No data” to “Reasonable data,” so you know how much to read into it.
- Insights Beta
- Opt in and the app compares your habits with your scores, for example by splitting your days by how long you slept. It explains what it changes before you agree, including keeping your logs for a year.
Scores climb with practice as much as anything else. A rising score in a game you play often mostly means you're getting better at that game, and the app says so throughout.
Back to contentsPoints, streaks, and achievements
A point total for everything you log, a bulb that grows with consecutive days, and achievements measured against your own history. None of it is compared with anyone else.
- Synaptiva score
- Points for meals, workouts, sleep, games, and listening. A meal counts once however many foods are in it, and listening stops earning after a daily cap.
- Achievements
- Forty milestones, from your first round to your ten-thousandth.
| Bulb | Days in a row |
|---|---|
| Ember | 1 to 10 |
| Azure | 11 to 25 |
| Jade | 26 to 50 |
| Violet | 51 to 100 |
| Nova | 101 to 200 |
| Prism | 201 or more |
Make it yours
Change how the app looks, how much of it you see, and how large the text is.
- Themes
- Seven to choose from: Forest, Ocean, Plum, Clay, Lumen, Graphite, and High contrast.
- Backgrounds
- Plain, dots, grid, diagonals, waves, rings, or a photo of your own.
- Typefaces and text size
- Standard, rounded, serif, or monospaced type. Follow your phone's text size or choose one of seven sizes, up to very large.
- How much you see
- Just the basics (the logs and games), Everyday (adds the plan and the week), or Everything (adds the baseline and analysis). You can rearrange the home screen too.
- Simple mode
- Every screen has a small ⓘ button explaining what it does and where it stops being reliable. Simple mode shows that text right on the page.
- Your reason why
- Add a photo and a line about why you're doing this, like a person or a place. It shows on your home screen and never leaves your phone.
Your data stays on your phone
There's no account and no server. Everything you log is stored on your phone, and deleting the app removes all of it.
- What leaves your phone
- Only a song search, a barcode, or a food name, each sent only when you use that feature, to Apple, Open Food Facts, or the USDA.
- Protected by your passcode
- iOS encrypts the app's data with a key tied to your phone's passcode. Photos you add get the strongest protection iOS offers.
- You choose how long
- Logs are kept for seven days by default, or longer if you choose. Long-term summaries are kept for five years.
- Reset and export
- My data has a reset button for each part of the app, and can export everything you've logged as one file.
